about

The third instalment of Jazz Shit & Real Books sees Paul Wilbury at his very best. Boasting 10 tracks of real Hip Hop vibes. The first track “Beatin’ Jazz” is not only a masterclass in Jazz sample manipulation and swung breaks, but also a fitting description for the whole album. Paul Wilbury flexes his talents from start to finish as we meander through a plethora of Saxophone stabs, Walking double Bass Lines and Jazzy Soulful Keys. The Jazz continues through and changes mood as we reach “Bluesboi” a laid back and slightly melancholic beat, set in juxtaposition to its predecessors and a welcome interlude. A crisp looped piano leads this pensive track, intertwined with a tight break and underlined with a saturated low end tamed by a pulsing kick. The next stand out track is “While at Night” a heavy hitting beat swinging towards the Boom Bap realms. The instrumentation of Upright Bass noodling from the first beat sets this behemoth in motion and all brakes have been cut as we soar down this cavalcade of Hip Hop. Sax stabs bouncing off the a perfectly swung break and sweeping into full focus as they take centre stage all while the Bass keeps driving us forward. A true old school flavour brought back to life with a modern vision.
As we enter the climax of this album we hear “Afternoon” a subtly somber beat with a quintessentially Lo-Fi feel. Next up is “Speaking Through” a dusty Saxophone driven track that leads us perfectly into the finale; “NotwhatIwanted”, which if anything, is everything we wanted in a final track. Combining elements of all the other 9 beats, this crisp clean cut, yet rustling dusty beat, encompasses everything we have learnt and loved about Paul Wilburys style, flare and creative process. The only thing left to
question is; Where’s the repeat button & When is Vol.4?
